What to Play Before GTA 6 — The Prep Plan

Whether you are a series veteran or have never touched a GTA, here is what is actually worth playing first and what you can safely skip.

There is still time before GTA VI to play one large game properly, or two if you are efficient. Here is how to spend it.

First, the most important thing: GTA stories do not connect. You do not need to play anything to understand GTA VI. Lucia and Jason are new characters in a new state with a new story. Nothing below is homework.

What earlier games give you is context — recognising how the formula works, so you notice what GTA VI changes.

If you have never played a GTA

Play GTA V. Campaign only.

It is routinely available cheaply, it runs on everything, and its three-protagonist structure is the direct ancestor of GTA VI's dual-protagonist design. Playing it means you will immediately understand what the Lucia and Jason switching mechanic is building on.

The campaign runs roughly 30 hours. At an hour a day that is comfortable.

Do not feel obliged to touch GTA Online. It is a thirteen-year-old live-service economy with a brutal onboarding experience, and it will teach you very little about GTA VI's campaign.

If you have played GTA V but not Red Dead Redemption 2

This is the single best use of your remaining time.

This is counterintuitive, so here is the reasoning: RDR2 is Rockstar's most recent single-player game, and it is where the studio's current design philosophy actually lives. The NPC routines, the environmental detail, the slower and more deliberate mission pacing, the systemic world reactions — GTA VI is being built by the team that made RDR2, not the team that made GTA V in 2013.

If you want to know what GTA VI will feel like moment to moment, RDR2 is a far better predictor than GTA V is.

It is long — 50 or more hours for the campaign. Doable if you are deliberate about it.

If you have played both

Two good options.

Replay GTA Vice City. It is short, it is cheap, and GTA VI returns to Vice City. Playing the 2002 original makes the callbacks land. There is already evidence in the trailers of direct references to that era.

Or grind GTA Online for money. With a caveat covered below.

About GTA Online money

A persistent rumour says GTA Online progress or currency will transfer to GTA VI. Rockstar has not confirmed any cash transfer.

Our read: treat any grinding you do as something you are doing because you enjoy GTA Online right now, not as an investment. If a transfer happens, great. If you are grinding purely in hope of a payout that was never promised, you are likely to be disappointed.

What to skip

GTA IV, unless you specifically want to. It is a good game with a notoriously rough PC version and a much heavier tone that is not especially predictive of GTA VI.

The older 3D-era titles. Enjoyable as history, but mechanically very distant from anything GTA VI will do.

Every GTA VI leak compilation video on YouTube. Most are recycled speculation presented as fact, and the genuine leaked material spoils things you will want to see fresh.

The practical checklist

Beyond playing, the boring preparation matters:

  • Free up storage on your console now — an install of this size needs room, and doing it on launch night is miserable.
  • Decide physical versus digital. Digital means preload; preload means playing at unlock.
  • If you care about avoiding story spoilers, mute GTA keywords on social platforms starting around a week before launch. Leaks escalate sharply in the final days.
