GTA 6 Parents Guide — What Is Actually in the Game
An honest, non-alarmist breakdown of the content, the age rating, what the online component exposes kids to, and how the parental controls work.
If you are buying GTA 6 for someone under 17, or deciding whether to, this is the information you actually need. No moralising in either direction.
The rating
Grand Theft Auto games are consistently rated M for Mature (17+) by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe. GTA 6 will be no exception.
These are not arbitrary. The series has reliably contained intense violence, strong language, sexual content, nudity, drug use and gambling themes. A GTA game is an adult product in the same sense an R-rated film is.
What that means in practice
Based on every previous entry, expect:
Violence. Central to the gameplay, frequently graphic, and directed at civilians as well as enemies. Unlike many action games, the violence is often optional and player-initiated rather than purely defensive.
Language. Constant and strong throughout dialogue and radio.
Sexual content. Previous entries have included nudity, strip club scenes and sexual references. GTA 6's Florida setting is unlikely to tone this down.
Drugs and alcohol. Both depicted and usable.
Satire. Much of the content is framed as parody of American culture. That framing does not make the content milder; it just gives it a point.
The part parents usually miss
The single-player content is rated and knowable. The online component is not.
If GTA 6 includes an online mode, your child will be in voice and text contact with strangers, many of them adults, with no content rating governing what gets said. In GTA Online this has been a persistent issue for over a decade.
For most parents this is the bigger consideration than the game's own content.
Parental controls that actually work
PlayStation 5: Settings → Family and Parental Controls. You can set age limits for games, restrict communication with other players, disable user-generated content, and cap spending. Set these up under a child account, not by trusting the honour system.
Xbox Series X|S: Settings → Account → Family Settings. Same categories — content limits, communication and multiplayer restrictions, spending caps. The Xbox Family Settings app lets you manage this from a phone.
On both platforms, communication restrictions are the setting that matters most if you allow the game at all.
Spending
If an online mode launches with a currency system, in-game purchases are likely. Set a spending limit on the child account. Both platforms support this, and it is far more reliable than a conversation about restraint.
The honest summary
GTA 6 is made for adults. Plenty of teenagers will play it anyway, as they have for twenty-five years. If you decide to allow it, the two things worth doing are turning off open communication and capping spending. Those address the risks a content rating does not cover.
