GTA VI's two playable characters are Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Here is what Rockstar has actually shown, and what it implies.

Lucia Caminos

Lucia is the first female playable protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto. After twenty-five years and six mainline entries, that is a genuine milestone for the series, and it is the single most discussed fact about the game.

From the trailers: Lucia is introduced in a correctional context, suggesting the story opens with or shortly after her release. She appears in close-quarters combat situations more often than Jason does across the footage shown.

Rockstar's framing positions her as a driving force in the partnership rather than a companion character.

Jason Duval

Jason is presented as the other half of the pair. Trailer footage places him in driving sequences and longer-range engagements more frequently than Lucia.

This asymmetry across the footage has led to widespread speculation that the two characters will have mechanically distinct strengths — Lucia closer in, Jason at range and behind the wheel. That is inference from trailer editing, not a confirmed mechanic. Rockstar has not described a skill system.

Why a couple changes things

GTA V's three protagonists were held together by obligation, leverage and mutual distrust. The tension came from them not really liking each other.

A couple inverts that. The tension comes from the relationship being real and the circumstances corroding it. Rockstar's own Bonnie and Clyde reference points at a story where the central question is whether the pair survive each other, not whether they betray each other for money.

Mechanically, it also raises an interesting design question that Rockstar has not answered: if GTA V let you switch between characters who were often physically apart, what does switching mean for two people who are usually together? That could mean cooperative mission structures, perspective switching within a single scene, or something else entirely.

What is not confirmed

Being explicit, because a great deal of confident writing about these characters is invented:

  • Their full backstories beyond what trailers imply
  • Whether the switching mechanic works like GTA V's
  • Whether either character has a special ability in the GTA V sense
  • How the story ends, or how many endings exist
  • Voice actor identities, beyond what Rockstar has formally credited

  • The supporting cast

Several other figures appear across the trailers, and the community has assigned names and roles to most of them based on fragmentary evidence. We track these on our Characters page with explicit Confirmed and Rumoured labelling, because the gap between what is shown and what is assumed is unusually wide here.

What is clear is that Leonida's criminal landscape involves multiple competing organisations, and the pair are not operating independently of them.
