Launch day for a game this size rewards preparation. Here is a practical checklist, ordered by when you should do each item.

Two weeks out

1. Audit your storage. Assume you need double the install size free during installation. Delete or archive now rather than at midnight on the 19th.

2. Decide physical or digital. Digital enables preload. If playing at the exact unlock moment matters, buy digital.

3. Update your console firmware. Major releases occasionally require a recent system update. Discovering that at launch is avoidable.

One week out

4. Start preloading the moment it opens. Preload windows typically open between two and seven days before release. Begin immediately — launch-week download speeds degrade as everyone piles on.

5. Enable automatic updates and rest-mode downloading. The day-one patch will download overnight instead of blocking you at launch.

6. Start muting spoilers. Leak volume escalates sharply in the final week, and story material does circulate before release. Mute GTA keywords on social platforms and avoid recommendation-driven video feeds.

7. Check your controller batteries and charge cable. Mundane, but a dead controller two hours into launch night is a genuinely annoying way to learn this lesson.

Launch day

8. Verify the install completed and the patch applied before you intend to start, not when you intend to start.

9. Go through the settings before the first mission. Worth reviewing: aiming mode (free aim versus assisted — this materially changes the combat experience and is awkward to switch mid-campaign), subtitle options, and any motion blur or camera shake settings if those bother you.

10. Play the campaign first, not the online component. If an online mode launches alongside, it will be congested for several days. The campaign is unaffected by server load and is the better launch-night experience.

11. Do not rush the opening. Rockstar openings are typically slow and heavily scripted, and the open world does not fully unlock immediately. This is normal, not a problem with your copy.

12. Expect bugs and avoid the outrage cycle. Every launch of this scale ships with issues, and the first patches arrive quickly. A rough edge in week one is not a verdict on the game.

The thing most people get wrong

Trying to do everything at once. A world this size is overwhelming if you treat the first evening as a completion race.

The campaign unlocks systems gradually for a reason. Follow the story for the first several hours and let the map open up — you will have a better time and you will not spoil the pacing for yourself.
