GTA VI has one of the longest and most scrutinised development histories in the medium. Having the actual timeline straight is genuinely useful — it tells you how much weight to give any particular rumour.

The long silence

GTA V released in September 2013. For most of the following decade Rockstar said essentially nothing about a successor, while shipping Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and continuing to expand GTA Online.

During this period, effectively every GTA VI claim circulating publicly was fabricated. Release dates, settings, protagonists, map details — none of it came from Rockstar, and almost none of it turned out to be accurate.

That is the first useful lesson: a decade of confident predictions produced very little that held up.

February 2022 — official confirmation

Rockstar confirmed that active development on the next Grand Theft Auto was underway. No title, no setting, no date, no platforms. A single short statement.

It was the first official acknowledgement in nearly nine years.

September 2022 — the leak

A large volume of in-development footage was obtained and published without authorisation. Rockstar confirmed the material was genuine and described it as early work-in-progress.

This is the one case where leaked material was both real and confirmed. It revealed the dual-protagonist structure and the Vice City setting well ahead of any official reveal. It also demonstrated how unrepresentative early development footage is of a finished product — much of what circulated looked dramatically rougher than the eventual trailers.

December 2023 — first trailer

Rockstar released the first official trailer. It confirmed Vice City, Leonida, and the two protagonists — with Lucia introduced as the first female lead in a mainline entry. An initial release window of 2025 was indicated.

2024 to 2025 — the window moves

The release window shifted across subsequent corporate communications, ultimately moving out of 2025. Delays of this kind on projects of this scale are routine and were not unexpected.

May 2025 — second trailer

The second official trailer released, showing substantially more of the world, the vehicle roster and the two leads in action. It remains the single most informative official material available.

April 2026 — the date lands

Rockstar confirmed 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version was announced.

Where we are now

As of October 2026, launch is weeks away. The date has held since its announcement.

What this history teaches

Three things worth carrying into the final weeks:

1. Rockstar announces on its own schedule. Nearly a decade of silence preceded the first confirmation. Absence of news is not evidence of anything.

2. Leaks are usually wrong, and the one that was right was unrepresentative. The 2022 leak was genuine and still misled people about how the finished game would look.

3. Windows move; announced dates tend to hold. The shift out of 2025 happened at the loose-window stage. Once Rockstar commits to a specific date, it has historically kept it.
